Jonathan Balcombe was born in England and raised in Canada and New Zealand. He studied biology in Canada before earning a PhD in ethology (animal behavior) from the University of Tennessee in 1991. He is the author of over 50 scientific papers and book chapters on animal behavior and ethics, and three popular books on animals: Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good, Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals, and The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure. A popular speaker, Balcombe has given presentations on six continents (the penguins are still awaiting his first appearance in Antarctica). In addition to serving as Department Chair for Animal Studies with Humane Society University, Jonathan is Director of Animal Sentience for the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy, in Washington, DC. He is currently working on a book on the inner lives of fishes.
