Dr. Dan Lyons
- Putting Animals into Politics
- Victoria Warehouse
Dan Lyons has been an animal advocate all his working life. He was a campaigner with Uncaged from 1994 to 2012 and is now Director of the think tank the Centre for Animals and Social Justice co-founded by himself and Angela Roberts. Between 2000 and 2003 he fought a celebrated legal battle against Novartis Pharma to win the right to publish leaked documents revealing illegal cruelty and regulatory failures during pig-to-primate organ transplant experiments.
In 2008 he won the UK Political Studies Association prize for the best PhD thesis in Governance and Public Administration for his research into the evolution of British animal experimentation policy, and his book ‘The Politics of Animal Experimentation’ was published by Palgrave Macmillan earlier this year. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Politics and a Member of the Irish Government’s National Committee for the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes.
Building on his research findings into the UK Government’s institutionalised lack of consideration for animal welfare and related public opinion, Dan and his colleagues are currently investigating and promoting potential reforms to overcome this disregard through, for example, a new governmental Animal Protection Commission.
