- Sea The Truth: is it the end of the line for the oceans

Dos Winkel (1047) was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands. After high school, he studied physiotherapy. In 1978 he was co-founder of the International Academy of Orthopaedic Medicine (IAOM) together with famous British orthopedic physician Prof. Dr. James Cyriax. Dos was the president of this organisation till March 2005.
Heavily influenced by his father (who died two years ago at the age of 95), his parents were also vegetarians and Dos is a life long vegetarian who has a deep love for animals, nature in general and the environment. Photography is one of his passions, taking up nature photography when he was only 10 years old. When he started diving in 1983, Dos became an avid underwater photographer and his work has been published all over the world. During the past 30 years, he has been diving all over the world: in cold seas, tropical waters, rainforests, mangrove forests and high altitude lakes. In total he has dove more than 4,500 times! During these years of diving, he has seen enormous changes in the underwater world in ALL ecosystems. These changes are never positive changes. Overfishing, enormous bycatches and discards, acidification of the ocean and pollution and contamination of the oceans have been massively destructive.
In 2005 he sold his private clinic and the IAOM, and started to contact as many ocean scientists as possible and the resulting book “What´s the catch with fish and fish oil” also saw a series of lectures about the problems of the ocean. He founded the Sea First Foundation (SFF) in The Netherlands and Belgium.
SFF is an educational organisation. Dos and his volunteers visit schools (primary and secondary), as well as universities every week in The Netherlands and Belgium, and gives presentations on the importance and the threats to the ocean offering ideas on how these may be resolved.
Now Dos is a full time ocean conservationist… a real ambassador of the ocean.
